Target surpassed: over 180,000 trade visitors at Light+Building

  • New momentum in the sector: energy efficiency a driving force for growth
  • Against the trend: large increases from home and abroad

“There is an enormous demand for energy-efficient light and building technology worldwide. And this is confirmed by the impressive results of the 6th Light+Building”, says Dr. Michael Peters, Member of the Board of Management of Messe Frankfurt. More than 180,000 visitors (2008: 167,000) made their way to Frankfurt for The World’s Leading Trade Fair for Architecture and Technology, which closed its doors on 16 April 2010. This is an increase of eight percent compared to the previous event two years ago. Under the motto of energy efficiency, 2,177 manufacturers (2008: 2,173) from all over the world presented their latest products and trends for the lighting, electrical engineering and house and building automation sectors at the fully booked-up Frankfurt Fair and Exhibition Centre. The increase in the number of visitors came equally from home and abroad. Altogether, international trade visitors accounted for over 43 percent of the total so that almost one in two visitors came from outside Germany.

“That was overwhelming: a sensational result, an incredible atmosphere in all exhibition halls and a level of business dynamism that will be maintained long after the end of Light+Building 2010. And this shows how important a leading trade fair is in times of economic difficulty – it provides an additional boost for the first tender signs of recovery. As an innovation platform, it sets new standards for technology, design and sustainability worldwide and generates opportunities for making new international business contacts. And, in an unmatched exhibition, shows what is possible today in the fields of lighting, building-services technology and energy saving. Over 180,000 visitors bear impressive witness to a ten-year story of success based on location, event concept and a close working relationship with our partners”, explains Dr. Michael Peters.
After Germany, the five leading visitor nations at Light+Building 2010 were The Netherlands, Italy, Austria, France and Great Britain. Significant increases in visitor numbers came from North and South America and Asia. The most important group of visitors came from the trade and once again accounted for almost one in four of the total of over 40,000 visitors. Also well represented apart from the trade and industry were architects, lighting planners and engineers.

96 percent of visitors were satisfied with the range of products and services to be seen. On average, visitors spent almost two days at the fair. The degree of interest shown by decision makers in the products offered by the industry was as follows: 55 percent of visitors (multiple mentions possible) said they are primarily interested in technical luminaires, lamps, components and accessories while 51 percent came mainly for electrical technology, 41 percent for house and building automation and a good third for the range of decorative luminaires and accessories. The poll of exhibitors produced a similarly positive result with 86 percent of exhibitors saying they had achieved their goals for the fair.
Both the trade and industry see the course of business and results of the Light+Building trade fair in an equally positive light. Friedhelm Loh, President of the German Association of the Electrical and Electronics Industry (Zentralverband Elektrotechnik- und Elektronikindustrie e.V. – ZVEI): “Light+Building 2010 has been a great success. The large number of visitors, the numerous expert discussions and the positive mood among exhibitors are good grounds for optimism. In particular, we anticipate further advances to be triggered by the subjects of energy efficiency and LED. The German electrical industry is the most important driving force for product innovations.”
Walter Tschischka, President of the Central Association of the German Electrical and Information Technology Trades (Zentralverband der Deutschen Elektro- und Informationstechnischen Handwerke – ZVEH): “Light+Building is the highlight of the electrical-engineering sector. The mood, discussions and visitor numbers were all very good! The main themes were e-intelligence, energy efficiency, e-networking and light. The fair left no doubt that nothing works without electricity! And visitors could verify this claim for themselves at the ‘E House’ of the electrical-installation trade – and this applies to all segments, from LED lighting and e-mobility, via energy saving for electrical equipment, to building-system technology. The numerous discussions left no doubt that the sector’s future-oriented topics – energy efficiency and intelligent electrical applications – were well received by the public.”

Michael Schmidt, Chairman of the Automation + Management for House + Building Section of the Federation of German Machine and Plant Manufacturers (Verband Deutscher Maschinen und Anlagenbau – VDMA): “Light+Building was held at a very active time for the building-automation sector. The economic climate in the sector has proven to be highly resilient and the results of the first quarter year indicate a speedy recovery. Our core area of expertise continues to be energy-efficient solutions coupled with attractive amortisation times and greater comfort for building users – a unique combination! In distinction to investments in the building shell, investments in building automation generally pay for themselves in less than four years and, in many cases, are CO2-neutral after just a few months. This is an important signal for politicians! Our members see that the trend towards greater energy efficiency is also gaining in significance in neighbouring sectors and energy-efficient products were being promoted on many exhibition stands.”

The range of products and services at Light+Building was rounded off by ACS – Computer Systems in the AEC Industry – which Messe Frankfurt organises in cooperation with the Hessian Chamber of Architects and Town Planners (Architekten- und Stadtplanerkammer Hessen - AKH). Held at the Congress Centre Messe Frankfurt from 14 to 16 April, this successful combination of trade exhibition and lecture forum was a very important platform for information and communication technologies.

The Building Performance Congress, the heart of the comprehensive Light+Building complementary programme, attracted around 1,000 participants. Also well received was the Trend Forum where design studio bora.herke presented the home trends for 2010/2011 in four scenarios.
After the fair, trade visitors of Light+Building and members of the public had the opportunity to enjoy Luminale, a highlight that transformed Frankfurt and the Rhine-Main Region into a series of fascinating worlds of light during the evenings after the fair. More than 120,000 visitors  from all over the world saw the 150 lighting events in Frankfurt and the Rhine-Main region, which covered a variety of subjects from LEDs and energy efficiency to the combination of light, sound and other media.

The next Light+Building will be held in Frankfurt am Main from 15 to 20 April 2012.
